Functional Nutrition & Health

Functional Nutrition is a personalised, systems-based approach that brings nutrition science together with your individual story. Rather than looking at a symptom or food in isolation, it explores how digestion, inflammation, genetic predisposition, stress, sleep, environment, lifestyle and daily food choices may interact to influence how you feel.

Initial consultation:R850 · 60 min.Complete personalised protocol and programme:R1,275.Feedback and accountability session:R425 · 30 min.

During a session

We begin with your health story and timeline: when concerns began, what changed around that time, current symptoms, eating patterns, digestion, energy, sleep, stress, movement, environment and goals. Using a Functional Nutrition Matrix, we organise these details across connected body systems and look for patterns rather than jumping to a one-size-fits-all protocol. Andrea Nakayama’s ‘3 Roots, Many Branches’ framework gives particular attention to genetic predisposition and its interaction with the environment, digestion and inflammation. Together, we select realistic food and lifestyle steps, track how you respond and adjust the plan as your needs change.

It may support

Science meets your story

Your symptoms are considered alongside your history, daily life, preferences, capacity and goals. The same food or strategy does not suit every person.

3 roots, many branches

Visible symptoms are viewed as the branches. The framework explores three interconnected roots—genetic predisposition and environment, digestion, and inflammation—to understand the wider terrain.

Digestion and absorption

Looks at how digestion, the microbiome, regularity and nutrient absorption may influence energy, immune function, mood and other body systems.

Food meets physiology

Food choices are matched to your individual physiology, tolerances and circumstances rather than based on a generic diet, trend or rigid list.

A practical, personalised plan

Recommendations may include meal structure, food quality and variety, hydration, supportive nutrients, sleep, stress, movement and daily routines—introduced at a manageable pace.

Education and sustainable change

You are helped to understand why each step matters, notice your own patterns and build skills you can use confidently over time.

Functional Nutrition at Routes to Health® provides nutrition education, health coaching and complementary wellness support. It does not diagnose or treat disease, prescribe medication or replace assessment and care from a registered medical or dietetic professional.

A person seated calmly with hands over heart and abdomen

Biology of Trauma®

Biology of Trauma® is a whole-person framework developed by Dr Aimie Apigian for understanding how overwhelming experiences can shape the mind, body and biology. It looks beyond the event itself to the protective psychological, nervous-system, physiological and cellular patterns that may continue after the danger has passed.

Individual session:R850 · 60 min.

Available in person in Faerie Glen or online.

During a session

We begin by exploring what your body may be doing now—not by forcing you to retell everything that happened. The Biology of Trauma® framework maps five instinctive stages that can occur as demand exceeds the body’s capacity: startle, stress, the ‘wall’ of overwhelm, freeze and shutdown. Together, we identify relevant patterns, current nervous-system state, body signals, protective responses and available capacity. Support is then paced and selected across three connected pillars: somatic and nervous-system skills, compassionate work with protective parts and patterns, and attention to biological foundations such as energy, sleep, nutrition, inflammation and recovery.

It may support

Mind and psychological patterns

Explores beliefs, emotions, attachment patterns and protective strategies with compassion. These responses are understood as adaptations that once helped you cope, rather than personal weakness or failure.

Body and nervous system

Helps you recognise patterns such as hypervigilance, over-reaction, under-reaction, disconnection, immobilisation, shutdown or difficulty returning to a calm and engaged state.

Biology and physiology

Considers how prolonged survival stress may interact with cellular energy, sleep, inflammation, immune and digestive function, blood-sugar regulation and the body’s overall capacity for repair.

Protective parts

Parts work creates space to understand the inner responses that try to protect you through control, avoidance, perfectionism, pleasing, withdrawal or other long-standing coping patterns.

Capacity before processing

Rather than pushing through overwhelm, practical tools are introduced in a sequence and dose the body can manage. The focus is on increasing capacity and returning to regulation.

An integrated path forward

Somatic tools, nervous-system education, parts work and biological support are brought together in a personalised plan.

Biology of Trauma® support at Routes to Health® is trauma-informed education, coaching and complementary wellness support. It does not diagnose or treat trauma-related, medical or mental-health conditions and does not replace psychotherapy, emergency support or appropriately qualified healthcare.

We begin by identifying the areas that matter most to you, your child or your organisation. Sessions use varied, progressively challenging activities—such as coordinated movement, catching and throwing, rhythm, visual tracking, concentration tasks and relaxation techniques. Exercises are adapted to the person’s age, needs and current ability. Powerbrain® can be offered individually, in small groups or as a tailored workplace workshop or programme.

It may support

Children and students

For children from approximately seven years and students who want to learn with greater ease. It may support concentration, coordination, visual tracking, confidence, independent homework, exam preparation and calmer coping with study pressure.

Adults

May support focus, mental flexibility, organisation, creativity, confidence and the ability to move between tasks while responding more calmly to everyday demands.

Corporate teams and leaders

Tailored programmes can support stress awareness, practical regulation skills, clearer communication, intrinsic motivation, teamwork and focused performance under pressure.

Focus and learning

Movement and cognitive challenges are combined with perception and eye exercises to practise attention, processing, coordination and learning strategies.

Stress and resilience

Relaxation, visualisation and practical brain–body exercises help participants recognise stress patterns, settle after pressure and build a more balanced response.

Motivation and communication

Training can explore personal motives, goals and perception styles, helping people communicate more clearly and approach responsibilities with confidence.

Powerbrain® is educational cognitive and mental-performance coaching. It does not diagnose or treat ADHD, learning disorders, burnout or other medical or psychological conditions, and it does not replace appropriately qualified professional care.

A calm Eye Movement Tracking session in a consultation room

EMT · Eye Movement Tracking

Developed and protected by the Powerbrain Institute, EMT is a distinct coaching method—not EMDR. It was developed from elements of EMDR, Brainspotting and Wingwave and combines guided eye movements, carefully worded suggestions and simple ideomotor responses to work with fears, phobias and emotional blockages.

One agreed theme:R2,795 · allow 2–3 hours.

In-person sessions in Faerie Glen, Pretoria.

During a session

The Powerbrain Institute describes the focused state used in EMT as Associative Theta Somnambulism. In an EMT session you are not asleep: you remain fully awake, aware, present and in control. The process is intended to quiet deliberate conscious analysis so that automatic associations can be explored through guided eye movements, suggestions and small ideomotor signals. Together, we focus on a specific fear, reaction or blockage. You do not have to describe every detail of a difficult experience.

It may support

Fears, phobias and blockages

Powerbrain describes EMT as designed to dissolve fears, phobias and blockages in children and adults. This may include exam or learning blocks and fears connected with animals, heights, confined spaces, needles, dental work, operations, loss or security.

Trigger–response patterns

Within the EMT model, the aim is to uncouple a learned trigger from the body’s automatic alarm response.

Emotional regulation

May help reduce the intensity of fear, anger, guilt, pressure and shame, together with anxiety connected to these emotions.

Feeling stuck

May help loosen emotional links and long-standing patterns that continue to influence present choices, reactions or a sense of being blocked.

Nervous-system balance

The awake, present-focused process may support a steadier internal response and greater nervous-system balance.

NAK before-and-after check

The Neuroaffective Cognition Test is used within EMT immediately before and after the process to check whether the emotional response connected with the chosen target has changed. It is a coaching check, not a medical or psychological diagnostic test.

EMT at Routes to Health® is a distinct, trauma-informed coaching method and is not EMDR, psychotherapy or medical treatment. Powerbrain reports rapid, lasting outcomes from its method; individual experiences and time frames can differ. EMT does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions and does not replace care from a registered medical or mental-health professional.

A non-invasive WebWellness bio-resonance wellness assessment

Bio-Resonance Assessment & Support

The WebWellness Life Expert 3.0 is a non-invasive bio-resonance wellness assessment system. It records electrical conductivity patterns through contact electrodes and uses WebWellness software to organise the readings into a visual report. The report is used as one additional source of information within a broader conversation about your symptoms, health history, nutrition, lifestyle and wellbeing.

Full assessment:R1,775 · 90 min. · Includes 42 system-based wellness assessments, a full consultation, a personalised report, and complementary therapy recommendations.Report-only assessment:R500 · 30 min. · Includes 42 system-based wellness assessments and a systems report only.

You remain comfortably seated and fully clothed while contact electrodes are positioned at the head, hands and feet. The system takes brief conductivity readings from areas that WebWellness relates to acupuncture meridians and organ and body-system categories. Its software compares recorded patterns with reference data and presents the results visually. We review the report together, looking for themes and questions that may deserve further exploration.

It may support

A whole-person overview

WebWellness organises readings across organ and body-system categories so that broader patterns can be considered alongside your personal history and current concerns.

Areas for further exploration

The report may prompt better questions about energy, stress, digestion, recovery, nutrition or lifestyle. Important findings should be confirmed through appropriate conventional assessment.

Food and product compatibility

The software can compare the body’s recorded response pattern with digital references for selected foods, supplements or products. This is not a food-allergy, intolerance or medication-safety test.

Personalised priorities

The information may help narrow down practical areas to discuss, such as food choices, hydration, rest, stress support, daily routines and nutritional guidance.

Bio-resonance support

When suitable, assessment patterns may help inform complementary frequency-based wellness support.

This is a complementary wellness assessment, not a medical diagnostic test. It does not diagnose disease, allergy or intolerance. Any important finding should be confirmed by a qualified healthcare professional using appropriate conventional assessment.
